Artist Spotlight: Gray Malin

I am so excited about today's artist spotlight. Feel a little embarrassed it has taken me this long to post about photographer Gray Malin.  Malin's work is fantastic, fun and colorful even when black and white. I greatly appreciate his attention to detail and the way his fills the frame. The work above is from A Timeless Pursuit  that was photographed in 2008-2011. Working with an Oscar de la Renta dress from the 60's Malin traveled the streets of Los Angeles, New York City, and Paris. The use of black and white for this series sets the tone and notice you are never able to see her face.  In La Dolce Vita, I can hear the people pictured on the beach, the waves crashing. A successful piece of art is one that allows you to be transported to a location, era or whatever it maybe. Gray Malin is a success!

Artist Spotlight: Shannon Finley

Today's artist spotlight is on Shannon Finley. Born in Canada and currently living in Berlin, Finley's work deals closely in geometric abstraction. The pieces above are from Rhombuses, Rays and Orbs exhibit. Finley applies layers of acrylic paint, hinting subtle textures and finishes, yet visually complex looking. While working on a freelance gig I came across these studies of the Los Angeles Metro Rail. The project has been somewhat of a giant review of the city I have spent most of my life in. With life being so busy you tend to forget about what makes your city attractive. Since I spend most of my time in the car commuting to and from work and or social events these studies are rather romantic. I often daydream what the city would be like with a great public transportation system similar to NYC, Chicago or D.C. Or would it even make my life that much easier. Every day I think to myself, 'where are all these people going?' It never makes sense to me, nor will it ever. How many hours do you spend in your vehicle?

On another note please go to Graham and Brown's website to check out my first post as a guest blogger. Very exciting and more to come. TGIF. Have a great weekend.

Love Yourself

I must be honest Valentine's Day has never really been my cup of tea. Yes, I am one of those who believe that you should love and shower your loved one with gifts all year long. The day always seems to make those single people feel "left out" and those in a relationship honored to have someone to spend the day with. For those without a valentine, enjoy your day, do something for yourself. Rent a movie and drink champagne, go for a hike, read that book that has been on your nightstand for months, go dancing with friends. For those of you with a valentine, enjoy your day together and remember all the other days you spend and will spend together. Today is dedicated to loving yourself. "Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world." - Lucille Ball

Recently I discovered Saatchi Online. They exhibit some really amazing artist from all different mediums and price points. A fun little tip when viewing the site is they allow you to view the artwork in a model room. Giving you a feel for how work looks in a space and of course the scale of the actual piece. I find this extremely helpful when purchasing art. Today I am featuring artist Hyeonkyeong Yeo. Her placement of vibrant patterns is so intriguing and quirky. Not to mention she is a fellow alumni of School of the Art Institute of Chicago. If these two ladies were mine they would go either in my dining room (breakfast nook), entry way or office space. Happy hump day!
